Tattoo Care for the Upcoming Summer Months

As I work in the aftercare industry, I see a lot of requests come through our emails asking for tattoo aftercare advice. Here are a few tips to help keep your new tat in good shape:

~Tattoos are actually minor surgery and it is to be expected that you will have some bleeding that should cease within a few hours. The best way to remove the bandage, should there be any resistance, is to just soak it in cold water until it releases. The last thing you want to do is tug at the site and cause further bleeding! Treat this area very very gently and only with total cleanliness during the healing process. That means of course hands and any clothing or even bedding that touches the site needs to be clean, and if you sweat on the area, at least rinse it off to keep the site as clean as possible.

~When your skin begins the peeling process, do NOT pick at it. Likewise, when you experience itching or scabbing - leave it alone, your body is healing the site and it will look great soon! Using aftercare will keep the area moisturized during this time and thereby should reduce these issues.

~Try your absolute best to completely avoid exposing your new tattoo to the sun for at least the first month. Sun exposure causes fading of the colors of your tattoo when it burns the delicate tattood area! After the healing process (usually 3-4 weeks), use sunscreen on your tattoo. The easiest method that works great is to outline it with a cheap tube of Chapstick containing sunscreen, then just fill it in with the same. Remember to reapply if the skin gets wet or at least every few hours during sun exposure. Small tattoos are easily protected by placing a bandage over them, but then no one will see your new tat! As much as it is tempting to want to show off your new work of art, try your best to keep it covered from direct sunlight, most importantly during healing time - your ink should remain vibrant for a long time to come.

~Never apply products containing alcohol or citrus products during this crucial healing time -- they dry and can actually burn the tender skin you want to keep moist! Also, don't use Vaseline or petroleum based products as they have been found to clog pores and draw out the ink - as a result, pimples or bumps may occur.

~Don't use really hot water in your shower, also stay away from soaking in tubs, saunas, Jaccuzis or swimming during the healing process.

~The most important things to keep in mind while your tattoo heals, are protection and cleanliness of the site. If you have severe itching or pain or the area begins to appear infected, contact your tattoo artist or physician right away. Tattoo healing isn't a rough experience. With today's sanitary guidelines, most shops are kept extremely clean and use only sterile, safe equipment. Most of us breeze through the healing process, resulting in a great work of art to show off for the rest of our lives!

Why Use a Tattoo Aftercare Product?

As Part-Owner of a tattoo aftercare company, I am of course biased as to the use of these products. Some people disagree that they are necessary in the healing process of new tattoos. We beg to differ, and would not have started our company up unless we believed in the effectiveness of tattoo aftercare.

Aftercare spray soap: the reason you want to use a gentle spray soap as opposed to a regular bar of soap for cleaning the site is simple - you do not want to go overboard and include all sorts of chemicals that are not necessary or may impede the healing process. The soap is meant to naturally thoroughly clean the wound site, that's it! Keeping your new tattoo clean is of utmost importance to the proper healing of the site. Without proper healing, you can be left with a mess, an infection that will not look like the tattoo you should have ended up with. Strong soaps that contain all sorts of harsh detergents should be avoided. Soaps loaded down with unnecessary chemicals should be avoided. Just use a mild liquid spray soap and you will be good to go. Remember to keep everything that touches your tattoo clean - including clothes that touch it and even your bedding. Keeping it clean during the healing process really does make a difference in how it heals.

Aftercare Salve: The reason you want to use a salve is to help keep the site moisturized, thereby reducing the peeling and itching that comes along with healing. The salve is to be applied after use of the soap. Again, harsh chemical preparations including alcohol or ingredients you have never heard of should be looked at with caution. For example, many contain alcohol when alcohol dries your skin, so why would you use it? Salve should be soothing to the skin, naturally.

Both products are normally used for the first 3-4 weeks (typical healing period), but can be continued afterward. Anything you do to keep the area clean and uncontaminated during the healing process will help. Of course, sun exposure during this time is a no-no, please read our other articles on that subject.

Never in a million years did I ever think I’d be so excited about anything like I am about getting my first tattoo. Having worked in a very conservative career as a counselor and business consultant I’ve been more of a voyeur of styles and hip-ness sort of passed me by years ago. But now I find myself thinking about nothing else but looking for tattoo designs.

You can hardly look anywhere without seeing someone whose been inked. According to 2006 study funded by the American Academy of Dermatology, 24% of Americans between 18 and 50 are tattooed. The survey's results also indicated that approximately 36% of Americans age 18 to 29 have at least one tattoo!

I’ve done my homework and feel comfortable about looking for the tattoo designs I want. I’m not rushing into it and definitely decided not to go to a parlor to browse through the worn-out catalogs I’ve seen in the few I visited. I liked the cleanliness, hated the catalogs.

So where does one go to find a tattoo design that is just right for him or her? Yes, this is definitely a wide open passion. Men and women of all ages, backgrounds, races, lifestyles, and professions are choosing the perfect tattoo design for their personality and taste. It’s more like an enhancement than an announcement of some ideology that is communicated through skin art. It’s all about personal expression.

I’m using the Internet exclusively to accomplish the task of looking for tattoo designs. I am definitely searching for the ideal tattoo designs I want. That’s right, tattoo designs. I’ve decided on two for my initial adventure. One for, well, you don’t really want to know that much. Let’s just say when I go swimming they will both be fully visible, but only partially visible during my work during the day.

Then there are the flowers and birds and celestial subjects, and thousands more. Deciding on the type of tattoo is an important decision. There is absolutely no reason to rush the process.

• Make sure the tattoo design you choose is special to you. You should feel a tingle or a feeling of peace or excitement when you look at or even think about your design.

• As you’re making your design decision you’ll also want to be thinking about the location where you’ll wear your design in addition to the process of putting it there.

• Only when you’ve make your final choices should you begin your tattoo parlor visits. Naturally you’ll want to go with your gut instinct in regard to the look and feel of the facility.

• Please do not make your decision on price. Think about the amount of time you’ll spend in the process of having the artist transfer his creation onto your body. You should feel very comfortable when thinking about being up close and personal with the tattooist you choose. This is especially important in regard to the place you’ve chosen to wear your design.

• Finally, you’re ready for the big day. Rest well the night before and drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeine and cigarettes for at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. This will help keep the event as trouble free as possible. Naturally, you would also avoid consuming any alcoholic drinks for 24 hours or more as well.

All in all this is indeed a very special event in one’s life. One that is to be enjoyed and treasured. There is nothing as personally pleasing as making the decision to alter the look of your body. Years of conditioning, for many of us, have focused on making us think of such practices as undesirable. It is great to be alive in a world where we are finally coming to our senses, at least in a small way.

Since I was a kid I was always interested in the bad ass look. The look that every hot chick dreams of. The man that they cannot tame but again they cannot get rid of you because you have something that no one can offer, the image of excitement, fear, terror and confidence.

Second, choosing a tattoo design at the tattoo shop is a limited source to pick out, and please do not limit your self on their tattoo designs. Third, make sure you get the tattoo design that connects to the public that you're a bad ass mother that they should respect and not mess with.

What I would do is search online of what tattoo designs you like that would match or integrate with your new chopper tattoo. If you're going to commit to this new lifestyle might as well invest in it because you already spend the money for you bike so might as well spend on a good chopper tattoo design.

Tattoo Parlors are Businesses Too!

Many business owners have a habit of getting caught up in the “art” of their businesses and putting to the side the often unpleasant legal and business affairs. Tattoo parlors are no exception, for the owners are true “artists”, and “artists” sometimes forget that if the business is to take care of them, they must take care of the business.

Business Leases
Very few of us are fortunate enough to own our own buildings. Most tattoo shop owners rent their space from landlords. Renting a business location carries with it very significant concerns. You must pay attention to the details and know what you are getting into so that you can run your business as a profitable enterprise. When renting space for your tattoo parlor, pay attention to the following:

Will the municipality allow you to operate a tattoo parlor in that location? You should always check with the local building department before signing the lease. Many towns and counties have strict zoning law limits on where tattoo parlors can be located. Just because the landlord may allow you to sign the lease does not mean that you can legally operate your business there. This may be even more of an issue for parlors that do piercings.

Are you required to obtain any permits to operate the parlor? Each municipality has its own requirements. You should make sure that the lease is contingent upon you obtaining both confirmation of no zoning restrictions, as discussed earlier, as well as receipt of all required permits to operate your parlor. It would be a shame to spend money and time pursuing a location that is not legal for your business. (Hint: do NOT rely upon what the brokers may tell you. Confirm all specifics for yourself!)

Many leases require the tenants to pay all or part of the real estate taxes that affect the premises. Confirm for yourself what the taxes are and verify that there are no increases on the horizon. You are in business to make money. If you cannot get a handle on what your operating costs will be before you open for business, you are doomed to uncertainty and all the perils associated with not knowing what your business operating expenses are.

Many landlords pass on to tenants the costs of operating the overall center where the space is located. These fees are called “common charges” or “common area maintenance”. They cover snowplowing, cleaning parking lots, lighting for common areas, security, and the like. (This is typical in strip malls and shopping centers). Just as taxes must be verified, so too must common charges. Get copies of all bills for your space from the past several years to see how the landlord bills, what he bills for and what you can expect your expenses to be. Also, see if the landlord will cap increases on common charges at the same rate that your rent will be increasing (i.e., if rent increases 3%/year, then common charges should be capped at that rate too).

Insist that the landlord give you an “exclusive” clause in the lease. You would not want to open for business only to find out that the landlord just rented the adjacent space to another tattoo parlor!

Do you believe in yourself, your art and your business? Do you think you will succeed? If so, get an option to renew. Many leases are for five years or so. Five years goes by in the blink of an eye. Your customers will soon know you and your location. Relocating is costly, time consuming and detrimental to a business (in many cases). Take advantage of the landlord’s enthusiasm when you are signing a lease. And make sure that the rent for the renewal period is specified clearly

The moral of the story is that, just as with your artwork, it’s the details that count. Protect yourself and your tattoo business: Work with a qualified broker and real estate attorney, both of whom should know your business, its needs and what your goals are, so that you can focus on inking your customers.

It can be a challenge trying to decipher which tattoo shops are good and which ones are not. After all, they all have a sign in the window that says "Tattoos." How do you tell the difference between a hack and a real tattoo artist? Spend some time in a shop just talking to people and watching before you decide to let them create your new tattoo. If you are not comfortable with their work or the atmosphere, then move along.

A good tattoo shop will always have a tattoo flash or books of their work available. Photographers and other artists are required to keep portfolios and show clients their previous work. The artists who work in tattoo shops should be held to the same standard. In addition to looking through their portfolio of tattoos, each tattoo artist should display the paperwork identifying their state certification.

Good tattoo shops, which are proud of their business' quality, will gladly have all of the certificates on display, which address things like cleanliness and their policy on new needles. Some will post copies of the artist's hepatitis immunization records. Stand around and watch them work for a while. Make sure that all tattoo ink, needles, and ointments are stored separately and that they are always new.

Find a place where you are comfortable. A good tattoo shop realizes that its clients may be a little nervous, especially if the tattoo is your first. If a tattoo artist tries to intimidate you or to coerce you into something that you are not comfortable with, keep shopping around. Plenty of great tattoo shops believe in customer satisfaction. Remember, your tattoo is permanent, so take the time to make sure that you are really getting what you want.

In reputable tattoo shops, an artist will tell you if they don't feel comfortable with your design. This is the ultimate display of integrity. If a tattoo artist feels the tattoo that you want is above his or her skill level and is willing to turn down the job, then trust them. Ask them for recommendations. If they can't do it, chances are good that they know someone who can.

The best way to find good tattoo shops is by word of mouth recommendations. Check internet forums, go to trade shows and ask your friends. Find out where people are going to get great tattoo service. Remember, anybody with a machine can buy advertising space and talk about how good they are. You want to talk to their customers and find out for yourself. The Whole Process Of Tattoo Piercing

Primarily, any tattoo studio should be as clean as possible, and most places are, but check before you have a tattoo done. There should be proper disposal bins, sterile gauze, needles and needle buckets, as well as health inspection certificates and disposable gloves.

Let it dry and apply the cream 3 - 4 times per day for the next few weeks. It is best to shower so that the tattoo is not submerged in water. Keep it moist with a water-based lotion and do not tamper with the scabs, they are nature's band-aids. After the area has healed, use sun block to protect your tattoo from fading, it may ensure a longer lasting tattoo.

Do carefully choose a business that is licensed for such work.

Do try to keep things simple, as a small tattoo or one that can be easily hidden.

Do choose wisely the area that you wish to have a tattoo.

Do remember that time does not stand still; a trend today may not be a trend tomorrow.

Do not do your own tattoos or piercing; leave that for the artistic professional.

Do not under any circumstances have you body art done in any unsanitary area or conditions. Be alert to the surroundings of the establishment.

Do not tamper with the area of the body art as your fingers are full of nasty germs and it is possible to wreck the work you have done before it is fully healed.

Do not soak the tattoo.

Do not expose the area to heat and light.
