Things To Consider When Choosing Your First Tattoo Design

Probably the main reason that people encounter when deciding to get a tattoo is choosing what tattoo design they’d like. This is because a tattoo is “not just for Christmas” but is for the rest of your life.

There are various unique designs available which include tribal tattoo, dragon tattoo, butterfly tattoo, fairy tattoo, angel tattoo and flower tattoo amongst many others which can be found in all tattoo parlors around the world. This is probably the most important decision as once the design has been inked it is very difficult and expensive to remove.

Another design aspect which you my wish to consider is having an artist custom design a tattoo for you. However, this tends to be more expensive due to the additional demand out on the artist to have to pay a closer attention to detail. More common designs are less expensive and take less time as the artist has more than likely tattooed them before.

The next aspect of the tattoo design to consider is “will it be color or will it be black”? Black tattoos tend to stand out more on the skin simply due to bolder lines and contrast. Color tattoos are usually more expensive but enable the artist to use more creativity and add extra character to the design you have chosen.

Location? This is something you must consider as some places are more painful than others. Generally places on the body with thinner skin and are close to bone tend to hurt more. These places include the ankles, head, neck and lower back. Less painful places include the chest, upper arm and shoulders and the upper back. The place on the body that you chose for your tattoo will be determined by some other decisions such as will it be easily seen? Do I want it to be easily seen by others?

In summary, getting a tattoo is a big decision. You should not rush into this before considering the above points and be 100% sure the design you have chosen is for you.

The Sience Of A Tattoo

Tattoos are everywhere. And there isn't a place on the body that a tattoo has not been. For those who don't believe that, trust me they've even been applied in those places that some would be afraid to ask about or would cringe at the thought of having them there. If there is skin, you can ink it.

So how exactly does a tattoo work? Well, it's very easy to understand and it's quite simple. You have several layers to your top skin and the fleshy part below it. You have the skin we see, under it is a renewable skin that keeps rising to the top, renewing old skin and under that is the area where hair folicles and sweat glands are rooted. Just below that layer is where the ideal tattoo ink sits.

The ink stays because it is below the layer that is continually renewing itself, thus making it permanent. I've actually heard some people say they tried to give themselves a tattoo when they were younger and it faded and grew away. Usually this is because they didn't go down far enough and thank heavens for that because who knows what they were using for ink.

The tattoo guns used to day seem to vibrate and dart at the ideal distance and plant ink perfectly for skin art.

Why don't tattoos itch? Well, in some cases they do but for the most part the inks used are very well accepted by our bodies. The only inks I would urge you to stay away from until more research is done on them is the glow in the dark inks. In some cases they have caused skin irritations and it probably was hell trying to get them corrected and treated. Many tattoo artists will not give you a tattoo with these inks because the side effects are too common and not well known to date, and liability consequences are too high for an artist.

Tattoos have been around forever and a day. They've found mummies with tattoos. Some cultures actually carve the design of the tattoo into the skin as they apply the ink. The pattern is actually a valley grooved into the skin. Very tribal and very traditional for those who get them.

Japanese tattoos also known as "Irezumi" whish translates roughly to "putting ink into the skin" is a very well admired art. Their dragons, koi fish and kanji tattoos are so beautiful that they've spread all over the world. They are also known for the traditional method of tattooing where the tattoo artist takes a long bone or wood, dips it in ink and then drives into the skin one-poke-at-a-time (Ouch!).

You can imagine how sometimes in ancient history a lower guy on the totem pole of a hierarchy would get an elaborate tattoo design to show his loyalty to his boss or leader. It is the pain of hours, days, weeks or months that they would go through that proved this loyalty to the person being honored.

Irezumi is best done by an experienced Japanese tattoo artist or by someone like the owner of Miami Ink who has studied and practiced well enough to hold his own in the studio and against other artists.

All the new tattoo guns being designed are great. All the new inks that are even more accepted by our bodies are wonderful but all the cool new stuff doesn't mean jack with out great artists like Kat Von D of Miami Ink as well. There are many great resources and education sites on the net.

Tattoos-A Social Mark For Outcasts Or A New Method Of Symbolizing Yourself-You Be The Judge

Teenagers who are afraid to get a flu shot from the doctor will sit for hours on a table and allow a stranger to pierce their skin repeatedly until a muti-colored picture emerges on their skin. The skin is swollen red and painful but the teen emerges from this operation with a smile and a feeling of pride?

Big strong men who refuse to go to a doctor for a checkup medication will allow an unknown person to use a needle to inject ink on to their skin for hours. Sometimes this ink is projected on very personal parts of the body. They leave the little tattoo shop beaming and proud.

What is the allure of enduring hours of pain in order to get a picture of your soon to be ex-girlfriend on you arm. The process will have to be repeated to change the name from Carla to Paula and then perhaps back again.

The purpose of getting a tattoo is as diverse as the symbols, signs and pictures that are available to adorn the body. At one time tattoos provided a non-status symbol for the radical members of society, hippies, motorcycle riders and prostitutes. The tattoo kept them apart from mainstream society.

On August 1, 1981, television changed forever. MTV devoted an entire cable network to a combination of music and video. MTV showcased musicians who were sporting tattoos. MTV exploded and so did the tattoo industry.

Tattoos have now became mainstream. People from all walks of life wanted a tattoo. Everyone wanted to be have a mark. Teenagers were allowed to get tattoos. Businessmen took off their shirts and got symbols or their favorite cartoon characters. Lawyers and doctors marked themselves with the symbols of their profession.

The reason for the need to have tattoos may be less to do with being rebellious and stepping outside the established status quo as it is an ancient custom that is older than the modern craft of body art.

Human have an intrinsic need to express themselves. If you have artistic talent you can express your thoughts and feeling using traditional methods. You can write a song, or write poetry. If you have a lot to say you may even write a book. Artist must Draw or paint to showcase their feelings. But if you have feelings or needs that you can not communicate in the standard formats, you may find the need to tell the world about you, your thoughts or ideas via a tattoo.

The act of getting a tattoo may be even more than the need of self expression. Some cultures believe Tattoos have magical powers. Other think that Tattoos offer protection against evil, sickness and Misfortune. In African cultures tattoos are used In some fertility rites

It is claimed that the art of putting symbols and pictures on the body existed 12,000 years BC. It is believed that The Egyptians created the art of tattooing. The theory is that Egyptians believed that amulets for protection. The Permanent protection that could not be lost Or stolen was a permanent adornment of the Body that today we refer to as a tattoo. protect them from evil. To insure the protection from the Gods the tattoo became a permanent adornment of the body. Although the word tattoo comes From the Tahitian “tatu” which means to Mark something

There are cultures that use tattoos as part of fertility rites, tattoos are thought to have magical and religious significance in these cultures.

The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian "tatu" which means "to mark something."

Tattoo versus Piercing

I think I agree with many women about the piercing: it is a temporary situation. If I decide that I'm tired of having the ear pierced, then it's a relatively easy thing to let the hole close (which it will do in a couple of days, he says, having learned this the hard way).

As for tattoos, I too have flirted with the idea. I think that everyone does at some point in their life. I haven't decided to get one, but by the same token I haven't decided not to get one either. If you want to know my opinion about, I think that a small, personalized tattoo, something like an owl or possibly a maple leaf could mean something to the tattooed. If this tattoo is placed in a relatively private location, then the things are perfect.

It may sound old-fogeyish, but if my hypothetical child were contemplating some sort of bodyart, I'd hope he/she would choose something less permanent than a tattoo. I have a niece with multiple ear piercings plus one in her navel and a great-nephew with pierced tongue and lower lip; if they decide later that they're bored with them, all they have to do is let the holes grow back together. A tattoo is a permanent thing, short of laser removal.

How to Start Your Own Tattoo Business

When starting any business, it’s important to gain any required training and/or education. When starting a tattoo business in particular, there may be certain training, certification and other requirements that must be met prior to opening a studio. Because of the nature of business, you will need to know how to properly sterilize the equipment and educate customers on how to care for their new tattoo in order to prevent infection. The best way to learn about local license and/or industry requirements is to call the local business office and explain the type of business that you would like to open.

Once your training and any necessary licensing are both successfully completed, it will be time to apply for a business license. This piece of paper is very important and must be displayed in your tattoo studio each and every day. The best way to do this is to place your business certificate in a frame and display it on the wall.

Now that you have a business license and any other special licenses required by your local business department, it’s time to choose a location for your studio. Ideally, any place of business would be located in a high-traffic commercial area. The more people that pass by your business, the better likelihood that they will stop in. In addition, when you advertise your business or try and explain to someone where it is located, you don’t want to have a lot of difficult directions. Instead, a simple ‘in town’ or ‘on main street’ would be ideal.

When it comes to advertising your new tattoo business, start small and work your way up. Because your business is new, you are probably working with a limited budget. Don’t worry, most new businesses are. That’s why there are alternate forms of advertising that can help you to get the word out about your new venture without spending a fortune. First and foremost, purchase a large sign to display outside of your business. Make sure that your business name, grand opening date and any special price offerings are noted for every passerby to see. In addition, decorate any windows in your store with samples of your work recreated as clear window adhesives.

Rather than starting out with a large print advertising budget, try writing a press release and distributing it to local newspapers, magazines and/or radio stations. Place flyers throughout town as permitted and on the bulletin boards of local stores. If you can afford it, offer a tattoo giveaway and special grand opening prices during your first week of operation. You may also want to consider contacting local radio stations with your plan to host a tattoo giveaway. This approach requires that you allow the radio station to award the winner on air, which will result in even more publicity for your new business when the DJ mentions the contest sponsor.

As a final thought to starting your own tattoo business, make sure that you explain the importance of proper tattoo care to your customers. Creating a reference sheet will help to keep your customers informed and will remind them of how often to change the bandage and how to avoid infections.

Freedom-2, LLC to Offer the First Permanent but Removable Tattoo Ink

Freedom-2, LLC, a pioneer in the development of safe, quality inks for the purpose of permanent but removable tattoos today announces their plan to deliver the first inks to the market in early 2007.

The Freedom-2 (F2) ink technology is the first and only patented ink designed specifically for safe and easy, future removal. The technology is the result of combined seminal discoveries by R. Rox Anderson, M.D., Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital; Craig A. Drill; Susanna Mlynarczck-Evans, Ph.D., and Bruce Klitzman, Ph.D. and Kim Edward Koger, M.D., F.A.C.S. of Duke University.

The F2 ink uses biodegradable and bioabsorbable dyes such as cosmetic-grade iron oxide that are encapsulated in a biocompatible polymer bead known as ploymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). These microscopic PMMA beads make up the F2 ink. Tattoo artists use traditional delivery methods to provide an F2 tattoo – the only difference is the ink.

An F2 tattoo is easily removed by a single, standard laser treatment that breaks the PMMA beads allowing the body to naturally expel the dye trapped inside. In contrast, the removal of traditional tattoo inks can create significant side effects including the development of carcinogenic properties, scarring and incomplete removal. Additionally, removing a traditional tattoo typically requires multiple laser treatments that can cost several thousand dollars.

Today approximately 24 percent of Americans have at least one tattoo and as many as 17% of them seek to have their artwork removed1. However, according to prominent physicians and researchers whose practices center around tattoos and tattoo removal, that number may be as high as 50%. Until today, the removal of tattoos delivered with traditional ink, was a painful, incomplete process. With the F2 ink technology, the picture changes.

“The F2 technology was discovered by practicing physicians with experience in the current tattoo removal technology. These doctors, concerned for their patients and future patients, have developed a safe, less expensive, non-invasive system of tattoo removal,” said Martin Schmieg, President and CEO of Freedom-2 LLC. “We are looking forward to presenting this technology to the public and believe it will allow more people to express themselves through body art without future regret.”

The F2 technology is being advanced by a team of researchers led by prominent polymer chemist and drug control delivery systems expert, Edith Mathiowitz, Ph.D at Brown University. Mathiowitz leads the development team and works with research and development partner, MediUm-Tech, GmbH, Berlin, Germany on the encapsulation and formulation of the F2 ink.

Currently, F2 is continuing its human proof of concept studies with testing locations in both the US and Europe. Following a successful suite of product tests, F2 will make the world’s first-ever permanent but removable tattoo ink available for retail sale in early 2007.

Astrology Tattoo Is More Than a Mere Fashion

Astrology symbols have become very popular tattoo designs, such as a scorpion or a bull as body art. This is due to astrological symbols making great tattoo designs. There is also a quiet mysticism that surrounds these signs that makes them a popular choice for the younger population.

Besides the zodiac signs celestial bodies like the sun and the moon also make popular tattoo designs. Most of the astrology tattoos are done in bright colours that give them a life of their own. Astrology tattoo designs can be tattooed just about anywhere as body art, such as arm bands, lower-back, ankles, chest or shoulders.

Different astrological systems have different signs which represent different meanings. However, the preferred astrology tattoo designs are based on the Greek or Roman zodiac system. These include the twelve different signs namely Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius.

Each of the astrological signs depicts an animal, character or object associated with it. Here are the traditional symbols associated with each sign of the Zodiac:

Capricorn (December 23 to January 20) is depicted by a Goat.

Aquarius (January 21 to February 19) by the Water Carrier

Pisces (February 20 to March 20) by the Fish

Aries (March 21 to April 20) by a Ram

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) by a Bull

Gemini (May 22 to June 21) by the Wolf

Cancer (June 22 to July 22) by the Crab

Leo (July 23 to August 22) by the Lion

Virgo (August 23 to September 23) by a Woman

Libra (September 24 to October 23) by Pair of Scales

Scorpio (October 24 to November 22) by the Scorpion

Sagittarius (November 23 to December 22) by the Centaur Archer

Other widely practiced arts include those devised by the Native American, incorporating the medicine wheel as an important part of their astrological system, and the Chinese that depicts animal names and traits to people born in a certain year.

All the astrology tattoo designs are characterized by certain qualities that make them unique. For instance, they are especially meaningful if they happen to be your sun sign, tattooing the sun sign that you were born under can be a simple way of reflecting your unique personality, goals and interests.

Today, the astrology tattoo designs can be seen on a wide selection of people from all nationalities and age. Earlier, the tattoos were limited to sailors and maybe artists. Now days, all tattoos are flaunted with great pride.

Flower Tattoos

For some strange reasons, I like designing flower tattoos more than others. Flower tattoos are mostly favored by women, they are like clothes accessories except that you can wear your tattoo to bed. It’s like having a piece of art with you all the time. I find women with tattoos more appealing, sexier, more feminine and more powerful.

The image of a tattoo can be so captivating that it stirs up all our senses. You can have a Rose tattoo with a barbed wire around it and still look very good. It’s Ying and Yang, loving and sweet but authoritative and intimidating. But if you are intending to ink a flower tattoo on your body, it’s best to find out the meaning of the flower and what you want it to represent. You can then combine different images to give contrasting impressions of your tattoos.

I have compiled a list of meaning of flowers as a guide before you tattoo them on your body. I cannot vouch how official these meanings are, but my research has shown them to be fairly consistent. flower tattoos are permanent, so look around before deciding on one.

Safety Concerns When Getting Tattooed or Pierced

Getting a tattoo is an exciting moment for those who crave the pleasure and pain of being inked or pierced. But when getting inked, one always must be aware of safety.

Make sure to research out the tattoo shop or shops for safety precautions. They should have a clean atmosphere, and must know how to follow proper procedures. The entire shop must have the proper resources to run a shop. Otherwise do not acquire their services under any circumstance.

The artist must have proper tattoo or piercing equipment. They must be aware of a clean tattoo gun, and how mandatory it is when they ink the customer. Cleaning their tattoo gun is a must, to avoid infectious diseases on the customer. When dealing with piercers, they must have proper piercing equipment. The piercing needles must be fresh, or else the odd of getting diseases is high. Clean equipment must be shown, as using fresh needles is a vital part of getting pierced, or else the customer’s health is at risk.

Make sure they have the best tattoo machine or industrial piercing set they can get. They should know what these are, so they will not scare off customers. Plus if they are skilled, they may use homemade tattooing machines, which should still follow the guidelines of safety, but without the fancy tags of the bigger company labels. Piercers should have industrial piercing equipment available, as those brands tend to be high on the market, as well as rate high in quality when customers get pierced.

These items are available through most tattoo supply companies, as tattoo guns and piercing kits are widely available to artists who perform these. These items are available wholesale, so the artist should know how to acquire these items.

Finding the Right Tattoo Artist

Getting a tattoo has become a new fad in today’s society. Once frowned upon by mainstream society, it is now become a commonly viewed item in everyday life. Upon getting a tattoo, finding an artist of your liking is a big part. Since this is a permanent deal, it has to be done properly or else you will be living with this forever.

Make sure to research the artist and the tattoo shop or studio. They should have all of the proper resources to get your tattooing done properly and in the most cost effective way possible. Most shops have flash art available, for those who need ideas on what to get. They should also have fine art tattooing books available, for further ideas on ideas. Once you have an idea on what to get, they should be able to present your idea through a simple piece of artwork, which should show you if the drawing is exactly what you are thinking of.

Each artist has its own specialty in what they draw. Some specialize in tribal designs, while others are in Celtic designs. Make sure they are able to draw up whatever it is you are looking for. They should have proper tattoo supplies, which should comply with safety standards. They should have a proper tattoo gun, or a homemade one that works properly. They should know how to clean it properly as well as work it.

When coming to the actual tattooing of the art you had drawn up, make sure it is exactly the way you want it done. Make sure they have a variety of tattoo dyes, colors and pigments if you are looking for color in your tattoo. They should be able to distinguish what blends well with your skin tone.

Chinese Tattoos Tips

I just saw a Caucasian woman with a Chinese tattoo that says, ‘love birds’ in Chinese. But that’s what she thinks. When read in the Chinese context, it means either you love birds or and you are a bird lover! On the naughty side, it can also mean you love the male organ, you know, the reproductive one. If you don’t believe me, trying showing it to anyone in China or Taiwan.

So it is really crucial for Westerners who want to tattoo Chinese characters on their body to really know what it means and symbolize. The Chinese calligraphy may look impressive, especially when combined with a Chinese dragon tattoo, but get it wrong and you may be looking like a clown with a puzzle tattoo instead. And by the way, Chinese tattoos are not Japanese tattoos. Some characters may be the same, but most of them have different meanings in the different cultural context.

For those thinking of inking the Chinese characters tattoos, I would suggest consulting a Chinese speaking tattoo artist before the procedure. Unless you want to look like a victim of a practical joke, it’s better to get it right the first time because tattoos are permanent and removal can be painful. Chinese tattoos with just the characters or writing alone can look quite boring unless the calligraphy is done tastefully, which is rare unless the tattoo artist is trained to write and have practiced Chinese calligraphy for a period of time.

I would suggest combining it with Chinese symbols to give a better impact. The Chinese phoenix tattoo is a very powerful symbol for women and the Chinese dragon is a good one for men. Both are mystical creatures from Heaven and symbolize power and luck. If you are more ambitious, you can put all the twelve Zodiac tattoo signs on your back. But you better be tall for this project.
